During the video I spoke of a Charter school that I worked at briefly. It was a nightmare and after all of what I had seen in Peru and Africa in terms of lack of material, I was shocked to come home to find a school like this. I have another series of videos and work entitlled: 'This Charter School; Lexus, Mercedes and Porsche in the CEO, CFO, and Accountant parking. The business of not getting kids books". In any case, after seeing how desperate for resources the kids in Peru were (and later Africa), I set up a donation fund four our trips that made a point of asking our students to bring clothing, and school material to give when we visited. When I came back and worked at this Charter School in Chula Vista, I realized we had a problem here as well. I have not intention of pointing fingers in this project. My goal is to simply provide methods of generating money for the schools. Students, teachers, administrators, parents and community can all come together, to shore the damn. While at this charter school, I realized how POWERFUL engaging in the community can be.
My students wanted to take on the project of having a 'conserve resources day event'. My cooperative teacher was all for it but asked that the kids bring the resources for creating the buzz from home. The Chula Vista area we were in is very poor as a fact, These kids often wore the same clothing to school for weeks on end. Many had parents that where either illegal or in jail. Over 90% had free lunch. I get a little frustrated writing this thinking back to the comments but, I guess I understand. The school provides very little, pays teachers very little and yet...we want to do things for these kids. It is a tough spot. Do we buy things ourselves? One of the videos I provide is of innovative teacher finding everything she needs for her kids at the dollar store. It's great. But...It isn't. These are not our children and this our job. The fact that we take is so seriously, that we are so passionate enough to take our own wages to provide for up to 90 students, 90 children, doesn't make it right. The optomistic outlook for a dedicated teacher, from the grape vine, is about two years. Two years. As I have been working towards and education degree I have yet to see a situation where students are provided the things they need. I love my last placement school. Love it, but during our first staff meeting the PTA had a raffle to give out 'gifts' to certain teachers. The 'gifts' were school supplies. I asked if it was a joke and was told 'no, we actually need these, we don't get highlighters, folders and stuff any more, we have to buy them".
So saying, before trying to fix the system I would like to try and alleviate the problem.
